Picking Up The Steel Mace

Before starting training with club and mace training, it’s crucial to learn how to pick it up quickly and correctly.

Many of the best steel macebell beginner exercises originate from knowing how to pick up the steel mace correctly.

The key here is using a hip hinge pattern to engage your hips properly while lifting. To get started, push your hips back as you prepare to lift, ensuring your body mechanics are aligned for a safe and effective lift.

When you’re ready to pick up the mace, place one hand at the end of the handle and position the other close to the mace head. This hand placement helps you maintain control and balance while lifting. Use the power from your hips to drive the mace up into the correct starting position, allowing you to begin your exercise with ease.

Once the mace is lifted, take a moment to settle into a relaxed stance. From this position, you can smoothly transition into your chosen exercise. For example, if you’re doing a 360 exercise and swinging the mace over your left shoulder, make sure your right hand is closest to the mace head. This hand positioning is essential for maintaining control during rotational movements.

When you’re finished, setting the mace down properly is just as important. Place it in a stable position so it’s easier to pick up again. Avoid leaving the mace lying around haphazardly, as it could not only make future lifts more difficult but also pose a tripping hazard.
